Frequently Asked Questions
Introductory Calls FAQ
Dr. Casey offers a free, 15-minute phone consultation. Here are common questions about the introductory call.
What should I talk about during the introductory call?
First, congrats! Reaching out can be really hard, but it does get easier.
Dr. Casey encourages clients to be as honest as they can. Briefly explain what you’re looking for help with (e.g. anxiety, relationship problems, disordered eating). Dr. Casey will ask questions throughout and decide if she thinks she can be helpful to you.
What about logistics?
During the call, it makes sense to see if schedules align and if the office locations are easily accessible to you (if not, virtual sessions may be an option).
Is it okay to ask questions?
Yes! Questions are welcome!
What are the next steps?
If you would like to make an appointment, Dr. Casey will schedule with you then. She will send you information about where to meet and some paperwork to bring to the first session. Therapy FAQ
The First Session: What should I expect?
The initial sessions focus on getting to know you and understanding your unique situation. Dr. Casey will gather information about your reason for seeking therapy, the history of your concerns, family and relationship background, medical history, educational and professional experience, interests, support system, and goals for therapy.
Progress: How long does therapy take?
The timeline varies for each person, as everyone progresses at their own pace. Therapy isn't always linear and meaningful change takes time. That said, Dr. Casey works collaboratively with clients to identify concrete strategies that can provide relief in the short-term while working toward longer-term goals.
Is it okay to talk about progress?
Absolutely! Dr. Casey welcomes and encourages conversations about how therapy is going. Feel free to share if there's something you've been wanting to address, or if you have thoughts about what's working well and what might need adjustment.
Medication: Can Dr. Casey prescribe medication?
No, psychologists cannot prescribe medication. If medication may be helpful, Dr. Casey can refer you to a psychiatrist, psychiatric nurse practitioner, or suggest you consult with your primary care physician.
Ending Therapy: How do I know when I'm finished?
It's helpful to revisit your original goals and discuss your progress with Dr. Casey. When you both feel ready to conclude, she typically recommends 2-4 closing sessions to reflect on the progress you've made, identify any areas you'd like to continue working on independently, and process the ending of your therapeutic relationship.
